Saavuin paikalle Myllypurossa sijaitsevaan liikuntakeskus
Liikuntamyllyyn kello 18, jolloin koristreenit olivat jo täyttä häkää
käynnissä. Liikuntamylly on liikuntakeskus, jossa on mahdollista järjestää
erilaista liikuntatoimintaa varausta vastaan. Väistelin pelaajia ja
ailahtelevasti liikkuvaa palloa ja kävin esittäytymässä toiminnan vetäjälle.
HNMKY:n virallinen Namika-TV oli samaan aikaan raportoimassa suoraa
lähetystä koripallokentän laidalta. Päädyin tarkkailemaan aluksi toimintaa
sivulta.
pelaajiinsa. Ennen harjoitteita hän näytti itse pelaajille, miten parhaiten
syöttää vastustajan muodostelman takana olevalle pelaajalle pallo tai kuinka
harhauttaa vastustajaa. Harjoitteiden aikana hän antoi paljon käskyjä ja
ohjeita pelaajien taktiikan parantamiseksi.
Painotus oli nopeatahtisessa mutta tarkassa pelissä. ”Faster, faster”
oli useimmiten kuulunut lause illan aikana.
Toimintaan osallistujat olivat suurimmilta osin samoista
Yksi toiminnan
kävijöistä, Yusuf, on vakaasti haluamassa uraa ammattiurheilusta. Hän pelaa
tällä hetkellä yökoriksen lisäksi HJK:ssa ja on aikaisemmassa kotimaassaan
Turkissa pelannut yliopistojoukkueessa jalkapalloa. Toiminnassa hän arvostaa
terveysvaikutuksia ja mahdollisuutta treenata urheilulajeja myös jalkapallon
ulkopuolella. Yksi suuri syy toimintaan liittymiseen on ollut matala kynnys
osallistua siihen.
toimintaa HNMKY:n oppisopimuksen kautta. Hän toimii koristoiminnan ohella
Kontulan iltapäiväkerhon ohjaajana. Hän on pelannut ja valmentanut koripalloa
jo pienestä iästä lähtien. Hän oli päässyt HNMKY:hyn harjoitteluun
kaverikontaktien kautta.
Minulle jäi vähän epäselväksi, miksi he tulivat paikalle. Minulle kerrottiin et
kyseessä on varausvuoron päällekkäisyys, minkä takia Yökoriksen pelaajat
joutuivat jakamaan kentän näiden toiminnan ulkopuolisten kanssa. Nämä
”kuokkijat” pelasivat kuitenkin hyvässä hengessä Yökoriksen osaanottajia
vastaan.
kova drive ja intohimo siihen mitä he tekivät. Pelaajat olivat ”nälkäisiä” ja
motivoituneita voittamaan. Tämä ei kuitenkaan näkynyt kentän ulkopuolella.
Tunnelma kentän laidalla oli rento ja sosiaalinen. Kilpailuhenki rajoittui vain
kentälle. Arvostan itse henkilökohtaisesti ihmisessä halua kehittyä ja parantaa
suorituksiaan.
Teini-ikäisille nuorille miehille urheilu on erinomainen
Monet pelaajista olivat
päätyneet koristoiminnan kautta muuhun toimintaan, esimerkiksi oppisopimuksella
itse vetämään liikuntakerhoja tai iltapäiväkerhoja nuoremmille.
NightBasketball is held every Thursday from 18 to 21 o’clock in sports hall Liikuntamylly (Myllypurontie 1, 00920 Helsinki).
NightBasketball-activity is a collaborative effort between HNMKY and Helsinki Youth Department, which is financially supported by RAY. HNMKY’s basketball activity is based on low-threshold recreational activity, in which one can join without payment or prior notification. The purpose of the activity is to bring meaning to a young person’s life and offer activity that maintains one’s stamina. The term ”NightBasketball” comes from the time of day the activity is held (18 to 21 o’clock in the evening).
I arrived to the sports hall Liikuntamylly in Myllypuro at 18 o’clock, during which the basketball training was already under way. Liikuntamylly is, as mentioned before, a sports hall where it is possible to arrange different kinds of sports activity on reservation. I dodged the players and volatively moving ball and introduced myself to the activity organizer. HNMKY’s official Namika-TV was reporting on the scene at the same time from the side of the basketball court. I too ended up surveying the activity from the sidelines. The activity was divided between two adjacent courts. Those under the age of 18 were playing in one court and those who were over 18 were playing in another. I spent the evening mostly with those under the age of 18.
The atmosphere was very physical, I could smell the testosterone and the sweat. At first the players played as teams against each other. Both sides had 6 players playing at the same time. Changes to the roster were made every time the ball went through the basket. Losing team of the round had to make 10 push-ups. Push-ups were used frequently during the activity. I interpreted the push-ups as a way to keep the muscles spry and also to keep the focus of the players on the game. Players clearly gave a 110% of themselves. For the next exercise the players practiced playing against each other in 1 vs. 1 formation.
The activity organizer was strict, but at the same time very motivating. He clearly breathed the experience of playing and coaching and trust for his players. Before the exercises he himself showed the players how to pass the ball to the person behind the opposing team’s formation or how to bluff the player of the opposing team. During the exercises he gave a lot of orders and suggestions to better each players respective tactics. Emphasis was on fast but precise game. ”Faster, faster” were the two words heard the most during the evening.
Most of the partiticipants of the activity were playing for mostly the same reasons. ”In here one can see his friends and keep up his physical health.” Many were motivated to play on a professional level, but there were also those who played only on recreational terms. Many participants also played football outside the basketball training. One of the participants, Yusuf, is firmly wanting a career in professional sports. He also plays football in HJK outside NightBasketball and has been a player on an university team in his previous home country of Turkey. He appreciates NightBasketball’s impact on health and the possibilty to practice sports outside of football. One of the main reasons for joining the activity has been the low threshold of joining it. ”You can just come here to practice and you don’t have to commit to anything.” The easiness of joining the activity and the fact that it is free of charge seemed to be very important to other young participants also. Not everyone has the money for expensive monthly payments, so it is magnificient that HNMKY offers this activity free of charge.
I also talked with the organizer of the activity about his history in HNMKY and his personal views on the activity. He got to direct the baseball group through an internship with HNMKY. He also works as a supervisor in Kontula’s after school program aside from the basketball activity. He has played and coached basketball players since he was a small kid. He got the internship at HNMKY through friend contacts. To him coaching a basketball team was an obvious choice. He has, as previously mentioned, had experience on it since he was a teenager. He studies to be a Youth and Leisure instructor in Lohja’s Kannel-Opisto on his free time.
He told me that one of the plans for the basketball activity was to turn it partially into a team playing at professional level. He thinks there are a lot of motivated players already, but a lot of training and commitment is required before any professional teams can be established. The development however is positive according to the organizer and he strongly believes that the transition to professional level is happening in the near future.
The organizer gave me a positive first-impression. He is clearly motivated in guiding the activity and to get the full potential from the players. I believe that if somebody would be able to make this group into a professional team, it would definately be him. Other players clearly respected and obeyed him. Many from the young people I talked to kept him in a high regard and thought that he was very good at what he does.
Suddenly a group of finnish players appeared on the basketball court. It was a little unclear to me why they arrived on the scene. I was told that it was because of an overlap between reservations, which means the NightBasketball team have to share the court often with outsiders. These ”gate-crashers” however played in good spirits against the participants of NightBasketball. The fight was long and hard, but markedly younger NightBasketball players gave a good fight against the other team. During this happening I moved out from the activity.
My experience of the evening was positive. The participants had a strong drive and passion for what they did. Players we’re clearly motivated to win. However, this wasn’t seen outside the courts. The atmosphere on the sidelines was relaxed and social. I myself appreciate in a person a will to improve oneself and one’s performance. Only through hard work and persistence you can achieve your dreams and these young people had it a lot.
For teenaged young men sports are an excellent way to bond socially with others and to get new contacts, but also to get some routine to everyday life. Many of the young men I interviewed hadn’t got a job or school yet, so this activity could be a way to get into other activies in HNMKY which are helping with employment. Many of the players had ended up in other activities, such as leading exercise groups and after-school clubs for younger persons.
